Mermaids a fantasy

 

Merry-maid of the oceans,

Seas and lakes

Daughter of Neptune

The king of water

 

Names she goes by many

Time and place change

Mermaids, Sirens, Morgens

 Havfrau, Ningyo and Seirenes

 

Divine dream beauty

Rosepetal soft, eyes blue

As the deepest sea

Body with fish’s tail

 

Her lovely songs

And body beauty

Allures all

Break from routine

 

She inspires

Poets and writers

Magic in Imagination

And dreams

 

A figure of virtue

Quite evil other times

She comes when

We are happy or gloomy

 

Her seductive body

Charming enchanting voice

Lures many innocent

To watery deaths

 

Oh magic woman

I wish to be you

Free minded and loving

In peace with creation

And rich with god’s gifts

 

She is everywhere

Books, sculptures, frames,

Ashtrays, cups, costumes

And on church walls too

 

Fake mermaids too

As souvenirs sold

Some even found

In museums of Europe

 

Some time I wonder

It’s all in mind

Strange species seen

Make us all dream

 

Is it a story fantasy!!

For child in the mind

To nourish imagination

Its been said that early Spanish mariners around the coast of Florida thought the manatees were mermaids! Excellent write on an interesting subject.

When I was a child I used to pretend I was really a mermaid. I would spend hours in the water. This was long before "Little Mermaid" became popular. I really enjoyed your poem, you really covered all aspects of the mermaid plus many beautiful surprises. A wonderful poem, very enjoyable!
