Life sings harmony,
Death plays the melody,
And that night he was humming her song.
When he knocked, she answered.
She welcomed death into her house,
Took his coat and hat for him.
She knew he'd been singing her song,
And she just wanted to hear more,
She began to help him play.
She was so sure of what she wanted,
Yet had no idea whatsoever.
As clear as things were perceived,
She was utterly confused.
She begins to dance,
Dance to the sweet melody that floated gently around her.
The song nears completion, and she stops.
She starts to reconsider, seeing things a bit clearer.
She always knew death was inevitable,
But she suddenly realized it was also post-poneable.
At that moment the cloth was removed from her eyes.
She finally hears the perverseness of his song,
And sees his grotesque plan.
What was once beautiful music to her ears,
Became nothing but cacophony,
That tells of her impending doom.
What she had so willingly welcomed,
Suddenly terrified her.
She thinks back on what she hadn't yet accomplished,
All the moments she'd let pass by.
Tears flowed freely from her eyes,
Tears of regret.
Tears for the life that she'd neglected.
Death laughs disdainfully in her face.
She then starts playing life's harmony,
He quits playing, in shock.
She continues the harmony as she retrieved his coat and hat for him,
And politely asks him to leave.
His laugh echoed in her ears long after he was gone.
The laugh now reminds her of all the things she must do,
Reminds her that he may be gone now, but he will return.
A part of her dies when death came,
But now the other part lives.
Death just sits back and waits,
He's very patient you see,
And always gets the job done.
So he's not worried.
Then again, neither is she.
