Lonely SpineA Poem by IanCJThat feeling when you’re drifting apart.
I remember that night
When you stroked the skin on my spine And I don’t know why, But it told me That I was yours. You wanted no one else, At least in that moment. But things feel different now. The way you sit next to me As you accelerate on the highway Tells me that I am not yours. Any man could be beside you, Sitting here in the cold confines of your Mazda, Going eighty miles per hour As we find somewhere that’s open At 12:48am. The way you look at me, Your eyes are empty and friendly. Your smile is slight and held up by marionette strings. The way our silences hug, I feel that I am a thought In the back of your mind, Only there to linger as something more important passes through. In that moment, As we held each other in the darkness, Trying not to be swallowed, I was yours. You were mine. Why is the world so cold now? © 2022 IanCJAuthor's Note
