Nameless; Age 5-
Nameless got into the back seat of her mothers car after school, a tear stained face. Her mother saw her, and she said, "Awwe, sweetie! Did you fall down?"
"N-n-no.." She got into her booster seat, and fastened her seat belt.
"Well.. Then what happened to make you cry..?"
"This.. This big, big boy.. He made f-fun of me.." She wiped her eyes on her hands, trying to stop crying.
"Sweetheart.. Awe, come here.." She leaned back and gave her daughter a half hug. "What did he say?"
"He.. He asked me what my name was.." She calmed down more as her mom drove off, making room for the other mothers. "And I told him that I didn't really have a name.. He didn't know what I meant.. I said my name was Nameless, and he laughed, and laughed and laughed.."
Janet frowned to herself. 'I have to talk to Drew again..' She thought. "Did anything else happen..?"
"Yeah.. He said that it wasn't a real name.. And that I was lying.. I told him that my daddy didn't like liars, and he laughed again.." She frowned at her shoes.
"It's ok, honey.. I'll go talk to the principal tomorrow, alright?"
"K-kay.." She sighed. "Mummy..?"
"Yes dear..?" She was trying to turn at a stop light.
"Can you tell me again why my name is Nameless..?"
Janet looked at her in the rear view mirror. She was sitting completely still, staring at her shoes. "Because.. Daddy and I couldn't figure out a name that was beautiful enough for you.. You're our angel; and even the name Angel didn't fit.."
Nameless stayed silent in the backseat the rest of the way home. She got out of the car, and waited at the front door with out uttering a word. Janet came and opened the door, and Nameless escaped to her room, quietly closing the door behind her.
She sat down on her bed, not taking off her uniform yet. She swung her legs back and forth again the bed, then got down, and went to the chair to her desk where she did all her colouring; sometimes, even some small writing homework. She took out a blank piece of paper, and her favourite crayon; orange. On the page, she wrote the word, 'bully.' Then she took out a black crayon and coloured the rest of the page black, leaving the word visible. She picked up the finished result, and took out a thumb tack to put on her bulletin board; 'Daddy will never like holes in his walls..' she thought.
After she hung it up, she went over to her vanity table her grandma had got her for Christmas; make up all included. She picked up the brush, and moved her long brown curls out of her face. Then she picked up a blue lipstick and put it on, doing considerably well for her age. After the lipstick, she looked at her eyes. She didn't want to make her eyes look any different than they did. She liked her deep, chocolate brown eyes. They were her favourite part of her still cute baby-fat face. She continued sitting there until a knock came from her door. She walked over and opened it.
"Hi.." She said to her father, who was standing there. "Your mother tells me you met a bully today.." He said calmly and quietly. "May I come in..?"
"Of course, Daddy.. It's your house.." She stepped aside to let her father move past her. She wished that her mother hadn't told, but knew her father would have asked anyway.
Drew sat down on the bed. "Do you want to tell me?"
"I thought Mummy already did.."
"She did; I want to give you the chance to tell me too. That is, if you want to tell me."
Nameless shook her head. "I don't want to tell you.. But I do want to ask you the same question I asked Mummy in the car."
Drew nodded. "Go ahead.."
"Why is my name, 'Nameless'?"
"We think that you are so beautiful, that any other name would have made your beauty not be there."
She looked her father in the eyes from where she was standing. She took a few steps toward him, close enough to where he could reach her. "Are you lying..?"
"No.." Drew answered, being a hypocrite in this moment.
"I think you guys are.. You and Mummy aren't telling me the truth, Daddy.."
Drew stared Nameless in the eyes. "I promise you I'm not lying."
Nameless slowly took two steps towards her father. "O.K.. I believe you.." She hugged him loosely around the neck.
Drew sighed to himself, hoping Nameless wouldn't notice. He looked up at the door, to see Janet standing there, shaking her head. 'She heard my promise..' he realized too late.
Nameless let go of her father. "I want to put my play clothes on now.. I want my girl privacy; by myself.." She looked at her mother at this comment, and Janet took the hint. Drew stood up off the bed, and left the room, closing to door quietly behind him.
Nameless sighed. She sat back down at her vanity, not even taking off her shoes. She picked up the purple lipstick. "L.. I.. E.. S.." She said each letter as she wrote them on the mirror. After she had put the lipstick back, she walked over to her bed, and layed down on her stomach, face towards the wall. Her tippy toes touched the end of her four foot bed. "I'm growing tall.. Nameless.. Nameless growing small.." She said to herself, right before drifting off to sleep.
