Nurse Jenna looked at her shoes, not really knowing why she became a maternity nurse. She hated blood. The doctors were bustling around her as she waited for her job; to get the baby clean. The C-Section operation was taking longer than expected, and for good reason. The mother was dying.
"Jenna!" The other nurses called. "Come quick, bring the towel! She's almost out!" Jenna instantly ran over, towel being already in hand.
"Uhhggg!" Cried out the mother. Jenna felt sorry for her, but knew they was nothing she could do to help at the moment. She held the towel out, ready for the baby at any moment.
"Sam! We just need to get the baby out! Save the mother after!" The assistant doctor called to the head doctor.
Sam sighed loudly. "I know! Stand out of my way!" As he shoved his assistant over.
Jenna almost couldn't bear to watch what was going on, but she didn't have a choice. She could see the babies toes coming out, as the assistant doctor helped Sam get the baby out safely. She held out her arms, ready to take hold of the girl. What seemed like an eternity later, Jenna was holding the baby safely, umbilical cord already cut and tied. She was getting her face as clean as possible, while the doctors successfully saved the mother. She smiled at the baby girl, who was crying, and wanting her mother. "Shh, shh, shh.." She said in her ear, trying to calm her down. "A few more minutes, love.." She walked over to the cradle waiting for her, and wheeled her into the original delivery room that they had been in. The baby had calmed down more now, still whining and whimpering, but calm. She would go get the father, but she had no idea as to their patients name, so she wouldn't be able to identify him.
Behind her, she heard the door open. The mother was being rolled in, closed, sewed, and sedated; but awake. She smiled at her, wheeling the baby girl over. "Excuse me, ma'am.." She said softly. "Would you like to tell me your name so I can get your husband for you?"
"Janet.. Janet Brown.." She managed to whisper. Jenna nodded. She left to go get him, and stood in the maternity waiting ward. "Husband to Janet Brown?"
Instantly, a man of about his mid-twenties stood up. "That'd be me."
She smiled at him. "Congratulations; you're a father.. Follow me please." The man sighed in relief. "Is Janet O.K?"
She smiled again. "Absolutely peachy." She opened the door into the room, and let him go in first. He completely ignored the crib for the first few seconds, making sure Janet was fine, everything is good.. 'Hmm.. He's a keeper, that one..' she thought, wishing she could find some one like that.
"Is this her..?" Jenna nodded. "I'm sorry, miss; you helped save my daughter, and my wife.. I would like to know your name.."
Jennas' cheeks grew slightly warmer. "My.. my name is Jenna, sir.."
"Please, call me Drew." Jenna nodded again. "What are you guys going to name her?"
Drew looked at Janet for a few seconds, with a pleading look in his eyes. Janet shook her head. He sighed. "May we have.. A few moments?"
"Oh-- Of course.." She backed off to the other corner of the room, interesting herself in the flowers.
"Janet, please.. My mother is already dead, and she would have wanted to see her.. Can we please name her after her?"
"Drew.. I said we could.. But.. You don't even know her name.." Jenna frowned to herself as her back was turned to them. She wasn't meaning to listen, but she was the only nurse in the room, and you couldn't leave a fresh C-Section patient alone.
"I'll find it; I swear.. Just, please don't name her.."
Janet sighed slowly. "O.K.. But.. For the birth records.. We'll Say, 'Nameless,' is her name."
Drew growled. "Nameless..?! Nameless? You've got to be kidding me, Janet!"
Jenna turned around, and walked over to Drew at this moment, and grabbed him by the collar, spinning him to face her. "Excuse me, sir, Drew, whatever-- Your wife just got out of an Emergency C-Section, that almost killed her. Now, unless you are trying to kill your wife, I suggest you stop yelling at her.." She said calmly, but sternly. Letting go of his collar, she took a few steps backwards.
Janet looked at Jenna like she just gave herself a death sentence. But Drew sat calmly back down on the bed. "I.. I'm sorry, honey.."
"It's.. O.K.." She looked up at him. "Nurse Jenna?"
"Yes, ma'am?"
"May I.. Hold Nameless..?" A flash of darkness appeared through Drews' eyes, but he said nothing.
"Of course.." She leaned over, and passed her her daughter carefully. "Nameless.. That.. Would actually be pretty."
Janet smiled at her baby, all the rest of the world lost. All that was there, was Nameless, the bed, and herself. Nothing else mattered. She had lived to see her daughter.. She could die now, and be the happiest woman; but she couldn't leave her daughter. "I'll stay for you.." She whispered in her ear.
Jenna took a few steps back, watching the happy couple. Sighing, she leaned against the wall, remembering why she had become a maternity nurse. To bring babies into the world safely. Smiling, she closed her eyes for a few moments, listening to the constant beep-beep-beep of the heart monitor, and the hum of the other medical instruments. She opened her eyes again, to see Drew leaning over Janets' shoulder, both of them with great big grins on their faces.
Doctor Sam walked in the door at that moment, causing them to jump. "Oh, I'm sorry, Janet.. I.. Just decided to tell you this now, rather than later.."
"What is it, doctor?" Janet sounded suddenly weak, like her stomach was on the floor.
"I'm sorry.. There is a 99% chance you.. Will never become pregnant again.."
Janet gasped, and silent tears rolled out. "I'm sorry.." Sam said again, before silently leaving.
Drew shuddered, as if holding back an urge to punch something; or someone. But then he lent over Janet, trying to calm her down. Jenna sighed. Another days work.. With a.. Not so happy ending.
