In Search of Self Through S&G

In Search of Self Through S&G

A Poem by Lale

I lie beside the river on a dim afternoon,

and I think to myself..

Why there are times to stay put,

steadily and without wavering?

And then times to fade away,

Like a sober sunset leaving a bloody twilight

But also times to sing hymns and dream?

“Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme” I sing to myself

Till I fall asleep...

It’s been a journey indeed

To there and never back

Where Orange trees are always blooming

Because Persephone is home

So it is spring every day

Let it be spring, always.

O’ God how I love the scent of Orange flowers!

Then the song ends and I gaze at the sky

The sun is hidden by cottons

Or clouds, I can hardly tell

“Hello darkness my old friend.” I sing again

It is a rainy December

Between 6 and 7 pm

Lost in the noise, in the middle of a familiar vacuum

Faceless people I reckon

I look at my hands and see the ground through them

Why am I disappearing?

“And whispered the sound of silence.” I tiredly wake up

Not knowing if I’m real or illusion

It feels good, though

“I’m a rock, I’m an island.’’

Why would I be?

“Cause a rock feels no pain, and an island never cries.”

Ahh! Okay.

I am jealous x 1000! Yow! One of my favorite things about writing is to include old song lyrics I love (used liberally in my books). This is one of the most creative ways to do that & now I want to try my hand at it again soon. I love how you intersperse observations from the narrator's life that SHOW the lyrics, then you share a little more of the lyric, on & on. This is a great song to use, too. It's all done tight as a drum & I applaud you your whimsical playful style, in harmony with the original (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

I haven't read your poem yet.. I'll go check it out right now!!
A wonderful poem shared. The smells of life and of nature. Can make us remember places and the faces we had known. I did like the ending. When I was young, I was a Island, now a old man. I am a rock. Thank you for sharing the amazing poetry.
