Chapter 2 - Secret Chamber

Night had fallen over the sleeping Toad Town. The dark sky surrounded the strictly guarded small city and millions stars illuminated the dark and cold sky. Chill breeze blew through the dormant pebble paths that slithered their way between the houses and the closed shops.

The whole city was asleep, despite one sketchy guy moving in the shadows. He wore grey coat and black fedora on his head. He walked like everything was fine and dandy, but not everything could be seen on the outside.  He knew the risk of getting caught, but he had to do this for the future. Future was everything to him. The past and the time now were ruined, but he had strong hope for the future.

He walked over to tiny village house and knocked one time, then two and then three times. It took while until he heard tiny footsteps tiptoeing their way to the door and slowly opened a little hatch and shivering voice whispered; “Who’s there?” “Lassiagal”, the guy whispered with lowered voice. He had Italian accent in his voice and many recognized him just by his voice. The hatch closed and the door opened little bit and the guy with grey Cashmere over coat slipped inside quickly and closed the door behind him.

“Good that you came, we thought that you would never come!” squeaked the little creature, who had mushroom’s top as their hat. The somewhat slim man with dark and dense moustaches under his big nose smiled slightly. “Oh Toad! But you know I couldn’t just leave you. I have to help a friend out!” he patted Toad’s shoulder. “Shush you beasts! You will wake up the children!” Toadette grimaced to her husband Toad and Toad’s dearest friend Luigi Mario.

Ever since the Mario brothers’ last adventure Toad had been settling himself to the city, he knew he was aging, but he just accepted it. He had already distant friendship to female toad named Toadette. Toadette was the sweetest and the most beautiful toad Toad ever knew. He had first been shy and difficult to approach this sweet toad, but after few “Hey!”s  and “How are you?”s they got closer each other. Nothing special, just the regular love story, but honestly what can you wait to happen in this so big but still so small city?  Toad asked Toadette for a date, but it took many dates for them to actually get into relationship. Toad was afraid of being tied down to one person, but Toadette just seemed like the perfect one and when Toad found out Toadette was pregnant, they had to move together. The children were of course one reason to move together, but Toad figured out that if he wouldn’t take Toadette, he would be lost forever! It was four years before the takeover and now Toad was just worried that the two oldest children were traumatized by this horrible happening. They just had to live through it and hope for the best. The future for the children could be changed to better, but the past was what it was.

Toadette opened the secret door under the messy bed of hers and let the men walk into the darkness that waited them at the end of a small ladder. Toad lit up his oil lamp and shed light into the darkness. Toadette closed the door and covered it again to make sure no one would find the door.

Luigi was little uneasy about the turquoise stone walls surrounding them, but this was small thing to do before the real things started happening. Toad led Luigi forward and after one turn around the corner they were brought to room almost full of faint smoke of cigar and strong smell of alcohol.

“C’mon you drunk jerks! Stop drinking! We need to be clear for the food to come in!” Luigi snarled to crowd that chilled in the small room. Food was code name for the weapons that should’ve been brought tonight.

 The room had posters of toads and people with their fists in the air and there was bright red text ‘BRING BACK THE CHOICE!’ There were lots of logo designs of the Galaxy Rebels on the walls and flag of the United Federations and also Guardian Units of Nations logo. They wanted to be protected by the Units and they desperately needed help at these rough times, but it was hard to get any kind of connection to the outer world. There was one round table on the middle, but lots of other furniture, mostly tables and flat platforms, were in the room too. There were six creatures sitting in the table, playing cards and drinking, smoking and laughing. Though they all stopped when they heard Luigi’s voice and turned their heads into his direction.

There was of course Mario Mario, who looked always much focused due to his thick eyebrows and moustache covering his upper lip. His slightly red nose intended that he was already drunk a little. Princess Peach Toadstool had leaned over the table resting her jaw on her arms and she charmingly blinked her long lashes. Her dark brown eye make-up brought powerfully her icy blue eyes up, so she always looked sharp and like “she has her head in the game”.  Donkey Kong took a long inhale from his cigar and leaned back on his chair. “Relax my friend. We have our time”, the almost two meters tall gorilla grinned to Luigi. “Bu-but we have to keep our heads clear because we could get caught!” Luigi’s eyebrows went down and his usually sad facial expression turned into annoyed look. He crossed his arm and looked at the rest of the crowd.

Birdo looked quite guilty that she had taken sip from one of the bottles on the table. She had to look at Luigi with the other side of her head because her green slightly glowing eyes were too far apart from each other. Good thing were that she could see easily her sides without much work. She wore yellow scarf around her neck and for some reason she didn’t have any genitalia, so she didn’t need other clothes. How did we know she was female? She could speak.

There was also Diddy Kong dressed in a suit just like his friend Donkey Kong. “Do you know what kind of food it’s going to be?” Diddy took inhale from his cigar and blew small smoke rings into air. “They say it’s something we have never seen. Something spicy!” Luigi smirked because he was quite excited about these new weapons. Daisy took quick glance of her wrist watch and looked at Luigi. “When do we need to leave?” “We need to be there exactly at two AM. The guards will start to get sleepy and then we go where we need to go and we can get the food”, Luigi nodded to Daisy and she turned her eyes to the clock again. “We have… one and half hours to go”.
