Memory Of A Kiss

Memory Of A Kiss

A Poem by Paul D. Aronson

"Memory of a Kiss"

She woke to the sound of breathing

Something peaceful against her ear

And for a moment she could have swore

That he were still here

She is stretched across the small bed

Seeking his skin to feel

But all she clutched were pillows and covers

And a memory time tries to steal.

She smells him on the bed sheets

She looks on the floor for his clothes

Silently cursing the cruelty of daylight

Wondering where it is he goes

And she reaches out for something

Just a grasp at the night before

When she and he entwined like lovers

Behind her lonely bedroom door.

The tears of her frustration cast a shadow

As they run down her cheek

Wanting so bad just to make love to him

Even now as the heart is weak.

And the blood that heats her body

Courses through her swollen veins

Outside the morning sun taunts her

Saying the night is to blame.

But she thinks of his lips upon her

The way he nuzzles hungrily against her skin

The gray fire and intensity within his eyes

As he takes her into heaven again.

She touches her neck in reflection

Knowing his mark is still there

Missing his sweetly painful kiss

The vampire’s fingers wrapped in her hair.
