Dear DaduA Poem by Ms. TwitchInspired by my father.Carry me gently down the stairs, smelling your sweet cigar when you place my head down Precious little puppy, how long will you be able to protect me Before the world and the men in it try to destroy the smile Try to put out the fire burning in my soul Taught me to stand on my own, don't need a man Don't need the friends who won't be there when it all falls down Don't need to prove to the world what's in my heart Bleed red and yet judging my skin and hair when we out together Can't possibly be his little angel, can't believe they mixed races Not black enough, can't roll my R's enough Two sides and half and half and in between but you taught me that one drop is all I need Taught me about where my uncle used to go, keep his spirit alive in my fist Don't buckle down to what the world says Push back when they shove you down, and worst to worst Grab that two by four and let them see just what you really mean My name is my legacy My grandma's story is intertwined in mine Never to apologize, don't need you to hold my hand Don't think I'll keep this pace, watch me as I take the stage Can you keep up with my rhythm and where I'm running off to Just starting out but give me some time Find my tempo to each and every rhyme My scar shows I survived, my twitch is the skip but don't worry these words won't miss, won't slip.
