Always, Like the River

Always, Like the River

A Poem by Lesley

Always, like the river, I wait for you
I wait behind the cattails and the tall grass
I wait above the rocks and between the fishes.

I rush and tumble upon myself as I wait
I am restless and I am cold, but I am patient
Patient to feel the wood of your boat glide just below my skin
Waiting for you to float on me and be content.

When you come I expect you to shed your shirt
strip off your pants and plunge yourself into my depths
I expect to hold you and keep you tucked inside of me
and when you die I expect to hold your bones.

but always, like the river, I wait for you.
I wait for you, but you will never come.
