meaning of life

meaning of life

A Poem by Lydia Waldock

Meaningless
Life is meaningless
Our definition of what makes life meaningful
Changes through the years
It started with making sure our basic needs are meant
Food, Shelter, Warmth
The meaning changed over time to
Work, Money, Supporting a family
And now our meaning has changed to
Making something with our life, Love, and success
I don't know what the true meaning of life is
Does it remain meaningless or is it an expansion of our basic needs?
Is life meaningless because we have time to care for the answer
Or did we ignore the question for too long?
All I do know
That with you life is a little less
Meaningless

Author's Note

Lydia Waldock
My AP Lit class just finished reading Death of a salesman by author Miller, and my English teacher left us with the question with how the meaning of an fullied life or a meaningful one has changed for the man or for humanity and I've been thinking about it all day

again, your surprise endings are so apt.
with someone else, with love life is certainly less meaningless...relationship with friends and loved ones are most important....success and what we accumulate should take a back seat, unfortunately for too many...it does not...and we forget why we really exist.
nicely expressed,

I think the meaning of life is what we bring to it as well as take from it. I was pleased ,however, that your ending had a happy note to it and I didn't feel that you were feeling so lost and alone. *Peace*Light*Love*Laughter*

Definitely!! Thank you for the review!
Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a theory you seem to have replicated here as you explain the way in which having a 'meaningful other' changes things for the better.
Third stanza should read "It started with making sure our basic needs are met"
And author Miller is an author called Arthur Miller!

and yes, poor Willy Loman...and what he tried to pass on to his sons and how the message got misconstrued...
