Part Three: Welcome Back

Part Three: Welcome Back

Will it be a happy ending?

“Let me get this straight,” said Michael, “You kissed her, and you’re engaged to be married to each other when you turn 20?” Jay nodded his hand. Today, he had walked into school with the prettiest girl in the whole world. Her name was Aurora. After he had kissed her, she woke up and wanted to marry him on the spot. The other people in the castle had died from suffocation when they breathed in all of the dust at once. He couldn’t accept on the spot, so he took her home to his parents. At first, his parents didn’t believe him. They then agreed that he could marry her at the age of 20. They had gone shopping for clothes, which was a disaster. Aurora didn’t understand anything. Literally, she had questions about every thing she saw, heard, or thought. She didn’t understand government, cars, money, or why she had to go to school. She was from the past however, so she talked differently and behaved differently.

Everybody at school kept coming up to talk about how cool it was to have an instant girlfriend. Michael seemed the most dazed of all. Everyone went crazy, when Aurora decided to audition for the school play. “It will be like William Shakespeare,” Aurora said. Some of the jealous, popular girls made fun of the way she talked. She had a strong interest. The school never had a good play to perform, so barely anyone signed up. For one week, the cast got to skip school and work nonstop on the performance. This was something Aurora was used to. Theater used to be a very big part of the culture in the town she grew up in. After the audition, Aurora found out that she had gotten the lead role! She went back to Jayden’s house after school, feeling like she fit in.

Jay’s mom welcomed her at the door. Aurora had been sleeping in their living room, because there was no room for her anywhere else. Jayden was an only child. Jayden’s parents were thrilled when they heard the news. They were trying to get Aurora used to today’s society, and theater seemed like a good place to start. They went out to a restaurant to celebrate. Aurora would only eat at one restaurant, Bobly. It was a dumpy little place, in the middle of nowhere. They served food that was popular 1000 years ago. Their motto was; BOBLY! THE RESTAURANT YOU SHOULD HAVE GONE TO 1000 YEARS AGO! Aurora also liked the feel of being where nobody else was. The next day in school, Aurora was called down to the gym to start working on the play. She was going to play a fair princess, who no one liked. The only people who did like her, liked her because she was royal. Throughout the story, the princess tries to find a decent person to be friends with. She finally meets a peasant boy, and they fall deeply in love because he sees her for who she really is.

For the next week, Aurora learned many new things, such as what a light bulb was, and how it worked. Aurora came home tired each day, and left the house with plenty of energy to go practice for the play. Things seemed to be running very smoothly. Little did Jayden and his family know that things weren’t going so smoothly. Aurora had made an enemy out of every student who came to play rehearsal that week. They had understudy, after understudy, after understudy. Aurora didn’t understand slang words, or swear words. When someone used them, she asked for the definition. When no one would give her the definition of the word, she soon became frustrated.  One afternoon, she was the only person who was still involved in the play. It had become a lot of work to put together. She decided to sit down with the director one day and talk.

“I don’t understand theater.” Aurora confessed. She broke into a sob, and the director tried to comfort her. “It’s okay Aurora. You’re a princess from 1000 years ago. You’re not used to everything yet. Actually, it’s not even you! Everyone else is jealous of your abilities and skills. The time period where you lived was very well educated. We’re slacking a bit here in the 21st century. Let me tell you something: if you can turn this play into a one-man show, everybody is going to appreciate you again. Mark my words.” Aurora marked her words with extreme care. Every night and day for the rest of the week, Aurora worked on her show. It was her show now, and she could crash it, or make it the biggest success of her life.

It was the day of the performance, and Aurora’s first day back at school. Everyone was mad at her for ruining the school’s theater reputation, and they called her mean names like ‘drama queen’, and ‘theater rat’. Almost everyone was coming to her show though, just to see how badly she could mess up. Aurora was determined to prove them wrong.

It was show time, and Aurora was dressed in beautiful pink dress. It looked somewhat like the one that she had slept 1000 years in.  Aurora stepped onstage in front of the closed curtains. It was a full house, and she had a case of stage fright. To start the show, she had planned to sing a solo. She swung into her theater groove, and did what she did best. The solo ended on a beautiful high note, and the crowd clapped. Throughout the scenes, she played all of the characters, memorizing the whole script. It was quite impressing. Her acting made it seem very real, even though there was only one princess on the stage. In the final scene, she did a terrific job of having a ‘crowd’ in the background while still keeping up with all of the lines.

At the end of the performance, she closed with a song. It was a beautiful love ballad, written by her father, King Charles. He used to sing it to her every night before she fell asleep. She had most of the crowd in tears, as well as herself. After the play was over, she received dozens of roses, and compliments. Jayden was very proud of her. It was late, and Aurora was exhausted. On the car ride back home, Aurora fell asleep on Jayden’s shoulder. Jayden watched her breathing as she slept. He ran his fingers through her curly, golden locks. “You’re my sleeping beauty.” he whispered in her ear. They rode the rest of the way home in silence.
