Part One: The Spell

Part One: The Spell

It's when the whole mess started

“Welcome everyone, to Princess Aurora’s first birthday celebration!” announced King Charles. The castle’s meeting hall was packed with fairies who had been invited to this very important celebration. Each fairy was allowed to cast one spell on baby Aurora. “We will now begin casting the spells. Patricia, would you like to go first?” Queen Clarissa asked. Patricia nodded her head, her golden curls bouncing. “Princess Aurora will be the smartest student in all of her classes!” she said with a smile. She flicked her magic wand, and golden sparkles flew into Aurora’s cradle.  Aurora smiled up at Patricia. “Next?” A blue fairy named Mabel flew up to the cradle. “Princess Aurora will be able to speak!” She waved her wand, and sparkles flew in Aurora’s cradle again. Aurora looked at Mabel and said, “Thank you very much Mabel. I will appreciate this wonderful gift.” King Charles and Queen Clarissa looked down in shock at their tiny baby daughter who had just spoken like an adult. Everyone thanked Mabel for her wise gift.

This process continued with all of the fairies but one. Evaline wanted to save her wish for the end of the celebration. Evaline was kind of forgetful, and tended to mix spells up. After Aurora was taller, smarter, prettier, more talkative, able to live longer, wiser, and more graceful, they all celebrated with a big pink cake. Right as Queen Clarissa lifted the Royal Knife to cut the cake, the doors to the meeting hall burst open. All of the fairies shivered in their summer dresses as an icy cold draft filled the room. Aurora started to cry, and King Charles had to do his best to comfort her.

“Well, um, Flick, I didn’t expect to see you here this afternoon.” Queen Clarissa exclaimed with a bit of nervousness. “Yessss, Yessss.” Flick hissed. His words seemed to carry a coldness of their own. “I came to remind you that I didn’t get an invitation to this little ‘get together’ for your daughter.” he said suspiciously. Flick was a despicable fairy. He had black wings, and he could fly as fast as a robin. He was always the person that people questioned first when mischief was aroused. He had a sharp nose, and piercing blue eyes that contrasted his whole outfit.

“I’m here to give the little,” he hesitated, “darling her birthday wish.” “Go ahead Flick,” said King Charles, “But make it quick.” Nobody wanted to upset Flick, for the damage that he could do had no limits. “Here is my time for revenge!!!” he bellowed, “I’ve had enough of your twinkling bells and cute fairy spells! Princess Aurora, on your sixteenth birthday, you will prick your finger on a spinning wheel and die!!!” He waved his black wand in the air, and golden sparkles filled Aurora’s cradle. Aurora started crying, and she couldn’t find the words to fit her moment of utter despair. The surrounding fairies were weeping and gasping in horror.

Through everyone’s tears and moans, King Charles remembered that Evaline had not made her birthday wish for Aurora yet. “Evaline! You have to destroy the spell!” he ordered her. “Your majesty,” she sobbed, “It is impossible to take away or destroy a spell. I can add to the spell however. Princess Aurora, you will not die, but you will fall asleep for 100 years, as will everyone inside the castle walls at that time. After the 100 years, a prince must kiss her to awaken her from this spell.” she said. To close the spell, she added the following; “Hiyo hey, sleep away, a thousand years to bed!” She waved her wand, and the golden sparkles appeared in Aurora’s cradle for the very last time.

 10 YEARS LATER

“Happy 11th birthday baby girl!” cheered Queen Clarissa. It had been a while since the sleeping spell had been placed on the poor princess. Aurora’s dad, King Charles, had ordered all of the spindles to be locked away in a shed. Aurora had tried to get into the shed several times to have a spindle to keep in her bedroom just in case, but it was almost impossible. There were 16 different number, word, and voice locks set on the shed. She had gotten the code to three of them, but her father figured out and changed all of the passwords. “Thanks mom.” Aurora grumbled. She only had 5 years to live her life the way she wanted. After those 5 years, she would be thrust into the future. The future. All of her friends, and the people she knew around town would be dead. Generations would have passed. Aurora wasn’t looking forward to it.

5 YEARS LATER

“Happy sixt-” Queen Clarissa started, but was cut off. “No mom. Not now.” commanded Princess Aurora. Everyone knew that they were going to fall asleep today. Well, only the people inside the castle. No one else in public would know about it. Everyone in the whole castle got to take a bath, even the milk maids. Everyone dressed in their cleanest clothes, and brushed their hair until it was silkier than silk. The royal family spent all day doing this. King Charles had ordered a huge bed chamber to be made out of the cellar, so that all of the workers could sleep there for 100 years. They sold all of their animals in the market. They stored all of their money in the shed that held the spindles. Everyone went to lie down in their assigned bed. The king and queen sat in their thrones. Only Aurora was allowed to wander about. Aurora walked around the castle, finding rooms that she had never known were there.

Aurora came upon one room, which contained an old spinning wheel. The spinning wheel still had a spindle. She wondered why her father had missed this room. She stepped closer to the spinning wheel, and took a closer look at the spindle. It had a very sharp point at the end. She leaned in even closer to the spindle. Her bare foot caught on one of the strands of spinning wool. She tumbled head over heel into the wheel. She put out her hands to catch herself, but it was too late. She had already pricked herself. Princess Aurora fell into a deep sleep on the spot, as did everyone else. After the spell had taken its place in the castle, Mabel flew in and lifted Aurora into her bed. She left a wooden sign around her neck that read; IN THE YEAR 1100, I WILL WAKE UP IF A PRINCE KISSES ME. LOVE, PRINCESS AURORA. Mabel also put another spell on the castle so that no one could go in, until 1100. It was the year 1000, and all of the fairies were going to hold their breath and cross their dainty, little fingers until the year 1100.

       50 YEARS LATER

It was the year 1050. All of Aurora’s friends were elderly, wise people with healthy grandchildren. No one had remembered exactly why there wasn’t a king, queen, or princess anymore. Mabel’s spell had done that. No one had tried to break into the castle either. There was nothing special ever going on in the tiny town. The king had always organized everything. There were two folks however, in another town that knew about Princess Aurora and what had happened to her. They were the King and Queen, and they planned to have a son so that he could kiss Aurora and wake her up from her slumber before anybody else did. The fairies heard about this, and accepted that they didn’t need to do anything about it. It was supposed to happen that way.

30 YEARS LATER

On June 13, 1083 Prince Nicholas Dylan was born to the King and Queen of a small town. They had been planning his birth for ages. They had planned for Nicholas to grow up and kiss Princess Aurora out of her royal sleeping spell.  For the next few years of his life, the baby Prince would undergo a lot of fairy wishes and schooling to make him the perfect husband for Aurora. In only seventeen years, he would find the princess of his dreams.

16 YEARS LATER

In the year 1099, Prince Nicholas was getting nervous. He had spent his whole childhood preparing to kiss this one princess. Would she be ugly and uneducated? What if he chickened out? What if he couldn’t find her? The fairies were getting nervous too. Everyone hoped that Evaline’s spell had worked perfectly, or else there could be serious trouble. Nobody even wanted to think of what could happen if the slightest thing went wrong.

1 YEAR LATER

It was the right year, the right time, the right place. The protection spell on the castle had come undone. Prince Nicholas Dylan headed out of town in a chariot, wearing his best clothing with a rusty ladder by his side. Nicholas arrived at the castle. He found the royal gate, and climbed over it using his ladder. He left the ladder by the gate. Nicholas slowly walked up to the entrance, remembering the directions on how to get to the Princess’ bed chamber. He took one step inside of the castle, and a cloud of dust blew throughout the whole place. He walked down three different hallways and went through six wooden doors.

He finally found Princess Aurora’s bed chamber. He opened the door. It creaked, and he winced. He walked into the room. On the dusty bed, lay the most beautiful person that he had ever seen before. She had long eyelashes, and she had golden curls that tumbled around her tiny body. She too, was covered in dust. Nicholas was very lucky that he had a cloth in his pocket. He wiped the dust off of her whole body. He paid special attention to the decaying sign around her neck. It was not legible. He took it off of her, and placed it on the floor. He moved closer to her head, preparing to kiss her. Was it really going to work? Would he be able to marry someone like this? Would she like him? A zillion questions ran though his hind as he bent down to kiss her. He kissed her on the lips.

His heart was racing. He was waiting for her to open her pretty eyes, and marry him on the spot. The fairies were waiting impatiently too. Evaline was more scared than nervous. How much trouble would she get in if this didn’t work? Nothing moved in the castle. No yawning workers, or cheering royalty. Not a single sleeping body lifted a finger. Prince Nicholas kissed her again, and again, and again. Nothing happened. He hugged her, and cried in her ear. Why wasn’t this working? Why? Why! “Aurora! I command you to wake up!” he said in a shaky voice that was close to tears. “Aurora!” he cried over and over again. He had failed. All of this time he had spent preparing for that moment, was now useless. Gone.

Prince Nicholas ran out of the castle and climbed the gate again. He rode all of the way home in tears. After he had left the castle, Evaline flew down to Aurora’s side. She used her finger to try and open Aurora’s eyes. It was no use. “Aurora! Aurora, I’m sorry! You can wake up now! Aurora! Listen to me baby girl! Wake up!” What had she done wrong? What had caused this terrible fate? She tried recalling the exact words for the spell she used. She had said “Princess Aurora, you will not die, but you will fall asleep for 100 years, as will everyone inside the castle walls at that time. After the 100 years, a prince must kiss her to awaken her from this spell.” That was exactly what had happened! Why wasn’t it working? Nicholas was a real Prince! It had been a hundred year! Then, in a horrifying moment, she remembered how she closed the spell. “Hiyo hey, sleep away, a thousand years to bed!”

She had said 1000 years to bed, not 100! The closing to the spell was the strongest part, so it must have undone the first part of the spell. This all meant that Aurora was to sleep for 1000 years! Evaline couldn’t believe how careless and forgetful she had been. She cried, and cried next to Aurora’s bed.

Yes. It is very long, sorry. The time increments might be a bit confusing, but hey, it was two years ago.

I really like it. Can't wait to read the rest! I really like how it did not go quite right. It bugs me when every story is perfect and has a happy ending. Then there are others, like the movie Ghost Writer, where you want it to go well and it does not and you end up staring at the screen with a gaping mouth for a good three minuites.
A-hem, any way, I hope you put up the rest its a really great read!
