Welcome Home

Written for my high school boyfriend.

Someday it’ll be
Just the two of us
We’ll sit down to dinner
And talk until dusk
When we go upstairs
And you open the door
I’ll cry at the sight of rose petals
On the bed and the floor
You’ll take my hand in yours
And get down on one knee
You’ll say a bunch of sweet things
And ask “Will you marry me?”
I’ll tell you I love you
Yes, I’ll marry you, of course
Then you’ll slide the ring on my finger
And my lips will gently touch yours

 

Then the day will come
We’ll walk down the aisle
And while we recite our vows
Hand in hand we’ll smile
Now, what we’ll all be waiting for
You will say I do
We’ll exchange rings
And I’ll say I do, too
You’ll lift the veil from my face
Of course, I’ll be crying
We’ll seal the deal with a kiss
For this, I have been dying
Hand in hand we turn and smile
We’ll be pronounced husband and wife
We’ll then walk back down the aisle
And begin our new life

 

A few months later
We’ll get some good news
The sign will be pink
Not one of those blues
Our first child
Will be on the way
The three of us will wake up
Together every day
We’ll do some decorating
We’ll hang the pictures from our day
Then we’ll go upstairs
And work on the nursery
We’ll go shopping
For furniture and clothes
And I’ll wear mismatched socks
When I can’t see my toes

 

We’ll go for an ultrasound
And they’ll cover me in goo
They’ll print us a picture
You’ll stare at it, and I at you
In a few more months
We’ll be a family
It’ll be you and me
And our sweet new baby
You’ll be taking care of me
As the months go by
Then it’ll start to happen
And I’ll begin to cry
She’ll be a precious girl
And, oh, she’ll be so tiny
Finally, she’ll be here

This is a true fairy tale love story.
