WinterA Poem by NickiI The earth is frosted in a thin veil of white
All sparkling ivory and pale light
Winter has the luster of a pearl; it shines lightly
The sky’s baby blue tinged with a soft gray that gleams brightly
People think the landscape is barren and colorless in the season of death
But, the snow reflects the colors of a rainbow, and the warm air dances from the lips of each breath
The tingle of numbing fingers, the icicles dangling like ornaments form trees
All show this rare beauty found only in the deep freeze
They say the cold has killed the flowers, but I know the murderer was time
The flakes float down in little flurries, innocently dancing to the wind chime
They look like butterflies, drifting ever so gracefully through the air
Hovering lazily in a spot, then spinning away with a charismatic flair
They say the trees twist jaggedly, their branches gnarled and knotted and dark
A shrill whistle splits the air as the frigid wind scratches the rough bark
But, I know they’ve got it wrong and as they wish it all away
I sit and soak in the splendid serenity of the snowy day
