Green EyesA Poem by NickiNo words can do them justice; they possess an ineffable beauty The windows to your soul are fashioned of gorgeous green stained glass You tilt your head and they shift: purposefully enigmatic They glint with some unknown pleasure I hope it’s ME But know I’m far from the spectacle that befits those eyes Sometimes I think they are the cruelest things on Earth When you run your hand through your chaotic strands of dark hair And set your gaze upon me using your eyes like disastrous weapons Leaving me weak-kneed and vulnerable I feel like a fragile piece of glass Dangling from a thin thread Spun by the disorder you create with every glance Other times I know that those eyes are the best thing in the world However deep and dark and mysterious they are Like the murky waters of a swamp dragging you down so slowly you can’t tell It all fades in your laughter When they squeeze shut and reopen glowing with unexpected happiness Because humor comes from context, and surprise is your comedic weakness The gleam of your unguarded green orbs It’s my inspiration Or perhaps my obsession The ever-changing inflection of your deep, suave voice The anarchy of each rebelling strand of soft, dark brown hair The smooth satin skin of your permanently tanned body The intelligence, the humor, the concern All your desires and dreams and fears culminating in the swirling green Your eyes kill me And revive me I hate them Because I love them Those wonderfully, terribly unsolvable, unavoidable, surprising eyes They plunge into depths explored only in brief figments of unreachable hopes Everything in those eyes All of you And my reflection
