An Unexpected Performance

An Unexpected Performance

A Poem by gibletish

I was shoved onto the stage without a script
And a costume that did not fit

I said this is not the right role for me
As I gazed out at bright lights that made it hard to see

I tried to observe the other actors to figure out my part
But the audience could tell it did not come from the heart

I looked for a chance to escape this miserable stage
Each passing moment it felt more like a cage

I was shoved back onto the stage with great force
While they told me that an exit would only lead to remorse

I had no remaining ideas so I simply froze
Taking up a small amount of space with a simple pose

I finally found the secret to make the audience cheer
All I had to do was surrender completely to my fear

I spent the next act holding entirely still
The audience said they loved my demonstration of skill

I started to wonder if there was a point to acting in this play
If they wanted a show I would give it to them in my own way

I tightened the costume to make it fit
And I searched my heart for my own script

I am not sure how long the play will last
But the performance is mine, at last
