Don't You Ever Settle DownA Poem by ghoststarsI loved you with a child's heart and you couldn't even spell my name right.
You stopped paying rent a few months ago.
You told me that you needed help and I offered. The carpets were cut up and the doors had holes in them favoring the shape of your fists. You appreciated my labor and thanked me with a smile. I knocked and you opened the door. We exchanged our jokes and your fingers graced my arm. I just knew that I’d never get used to the feeling of seeing your smile. I painted the walls of your bedroom in your favorite color. I waved at you with a smile on my face today. Your skin finally had some color on it again. You told me her name and how she made you feel. You handed me a handful of pennies to pay to the landlord. I knocked and you didn’t answer. I knocked and knocked and knocked. You must’ve been out, even though your bedroom light was on. Your voice has been mute for a while now. I saw you for the first time in weeks today. She was your new accessory, wrapped around your arm perfectly. I would tell you that I’m happy but I’d be lying. At least your rent isn’t late now.
