Breathe

Breathe

A Poem by gfm

I hold my breath, because breathing could drown me.

But I lust for the luxury of air to fill me up.

If only I could just exhale, inhale -

But no, I am strong, able to hold on.

I look around; maybe I’m not underwater.

And I long for the warmth of air to comfort me.

Maybe I should just let go, breathe -

But no, I am wise, wary of the consequence.

My world fades; the pain constricts my chest,

And I know.

I have to just leap, come up for air -

But no, I am afraid, and on fear I suffocate.
