BreakfastA Story by Gee BeeI was in KFC one time and I spotted a couple that inspired this short story.
Steam was rising from her coffee.
"Why did you call me?" "I just felt like having breakfast with you this early," she said with a small shrug. He eyed her warily, then snatched her coffee and drank from it. There was something that she wanted to tell him, but she was beating around the bush again. He knew her so well. "What is it that you wanted to tell me?" he asked. She didn't say anything, and instead took a spoonful of cereal and milk. He looked at her, then at the window a few steps behind her. The sun wasn't up yet. "We should buy a new brand of cereal," she said after a while. "I prefer cornflakes over rice crispies." "Well, they didn't have cornflakes when I went grocery shopping," he said. "So I thought you'd like to try something new." She said nothing again. But this time, she stood up, and sat on the chair besides his. She then took a piece of grapefruit slice and ate it. What was she going to tell me, he wondered as he watched her eat the grapefruit. Then she took another piece of grapefruit. And then she ate the toast and eggs that she had cooked for him. He noticed that she was eating more than her usual cereal-and-coffee combo. "You're really hungry, aren't you?" he said, putting a hand on her head in affection. "This is what happens when you eat for two," she said with a smile, as she continued to eat. At that moment, the sun rose from the dark sky. All he could do was cry and hug her tight.
