6 ways to show skin this summer, according to the fashion worldA Story by gemmaducaWe have the fashion industry to thank for this glossary of body parts you never even knew you had. From ‘innerboob’ to ‘bum slip’, this is what happens when we let Urban Dictionary and the Daily Mail’s sidebar of shame school us on basic human anatomy. Say hello to summer and a new dawn in unapologetic body flaunting … Sideboob A trend that brings us back to that period of teenage rebellion when we’d customise our band tees by cutting out the armholes with a pair of kitchen scissors. The look was popular then and it’s even more popular now, so much so that the Huffington Post has a dedicated sideboob page that it’s constantly updating with sideboob slideshows. Yes, it runs the risk of nipslip, but it can also look tasteful, subtly sexy and totally awesome a la Olivia Wilde, Jennifer Lawrence (pictured), Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Elvira Montana (Michelle Pfeiffer) in Scarface. We also appreciate the cool breeze around our chests when temps tip over 30 degrees. Innerboob A cleavage alternative to those of us born with mosquito bites, innerboob refers to when the two inner sides of the breasts are visible. Long before J.Lo at the Grammys, Jodie Foster brought innerboob to the fore as far back as 1991. Keira Knightley (pictured above in a shoot for Interview magazine) continues to peddle the trend, single-handedly driving up stocks for both n****e pasties and double-sided Hollywood Tape. Have we exhausted every b**b trend possible? Surely the only thing left is going permanently nekkid from the waist up? Underboob The underboob isn’t exactly new. The look dates back to the ‘80s and ‘90s when lads’ mags attempted to ‘push the boundaries’ by carving out a new erogenous zone for its gullible male readers. These days, we’re embracing the trend in large part thanks to Ilana Glazer and her rotating collection of graphic-print crop tops on Broad City. Underbum A common side effect of extra-abbreviated shorts, anyone who’s ever attended a summer music festival or stood behind a denim diaper-clad teenybopper on an ascending escalator would be familiar. Contrary to popular opinion, underbum is not the exclusive province of women from TOWIE. It's thanks to Urban Outfitters, Nasty Gal and the like that “bare fleshy under curves of the buttocks” has become legitimised as a universal fashion trend/style misstep we’ll probably live to regret. Side Butt Gwyneth Paltrow (above) has a long history of airing her derriere in public, inspiring a cadre of fashion-forward celebrities, including Kristen Stewart and Heidi Klum, to shave every inch of their body in the name of baring their side pubis too. Choose to expose your whole side with a sheer panel or opt for a thigh-split dress, cut on the leg as high as an ‘80s aerobics leotard. The trend's an unequivocal way of declaring to the world, “Look, no panties!” and “The yoga’s really working!” Of course, having a set of gams like Gwyneth’s and abs sharp enough to cut through granite certainly help. Butt Cleavage Unlike traditional builder’s bum, high-fashion back-end cleavage shouldn’t leave you wanting to rinse your eyes out with Listerine immediately after exposure. We look to the Venus de Milo and her subtle hint of exposed crack and Alexander McQueen’s infamous ‘bumster’ pants (above) from the ‘90s for sartorial inspiration. Not sold? Yeah, we neither. Though we’re big believers in women showing their bodies as freely as they please, I couldn’t think of a body part that’s less sexy to flaunt than my pasty white butt. © 2014 gemmaduca |
