The De Beers-owned International Institute of Diamond Grading & Research (IIDGR), unveiled SYNTHdetect, a synthetic diamond screening device capable of simultaneously testing multiple stones set in jewellery without the need for a probe. De Beers says the machine is an industry first and also has the industry’s lowest referral rate at around 0.05 per cent.

The device, unveiled at the JCK show in Las Vegas this week, uses IIDGR’s patented luminescence technology to rapidly and simultaneously screen stones set in a wide range of jewellery pieces, including rings, earrings, bangles, broaches and necklaces.

De Beers says the very low referral rate dramatically reduces the need for additional and potentially costly testing compared with many other synthetic screening products which can have referral rates approaching 10 per cent.

SYNTHdetect has been designed specifically for back office use to support jewellery manufacturers and retailers to better and more easily ensure the authenticity of the diamonds they purchase.

The device is the latest product to be unveiled in IIDGR’s range of second generation detection instruments, following the announcement of PhosView last year and AMS2 earlier this year.

IIDGR President Jonathan Kendall said, “SYNTHdetect screens multiple stones set in jewellery quickly, easily and reliably, and with the industry’s lowest referral rate. It will provide jewellery manufacturers and retailers with greater levels of assurance that every diamond they purchase and sell as a natural diamond is exactly that.”

He added, “SYNTHdetect represents the continuation of our second generation range of synthetic detection devices, which have been developed through ongoing research and development by IIDGR’s world-leading experts in this technology.

He ended by saying, “It is yet another demonstration of IIDGR’s commitment to providing products and services that support the diamond trade in all product integrity needs, helping to create a more confident industry for trade participants and consumers alike.”

IIDGR is taking orders for SYNTHdetect now, with deliveries beginning in September.
