Good Music

Good Music

A Poem by Kenneth The Poet

the 1980's murdered good music
and the 1990's fared little better

and then dim assumptions and
frayed opinions became null and
void because the masses have
access beyond the cable box
and the car radio

a zillion sound services
and a vermillion video sites
as if a zillion and vermillion
were actual powers of ten

Andrew Bird has an audience
and so does Murder By Death
and so do The Chromatics,
not exactly household names
but these highly capable souls
have thousands of fans and
a multitude of album sales
to their respective names

the democratic system governed
by electron flow and binary numbers
have given the select few
a real chance to earn their
cash flow, a fair play race
where the contestants hash
it out beyond the ranks of
the top forty

now anybody has a shot,
a more fair shot but a
long shot nonetheless

thank you webcam
thank you sound equipment
thank you software packages
thank you talent and ability

so grab the guitar, grab the mike,
and go grab some new coverage
so your verse can be contributed
wholly and rightly

and make sure to thank Whitman
and everybody else along the way

Ah to me the 1980's were the last decade of good music! What an interesting topic!

The evolution of culture into the information cloud one of my favored topics but not something I could ever write about lyrically. Though you did the topic justice! Your ability to write about contemporary and collective themes is truly one of your gifts, for subject choice is a huge component to engagement with an audience. I commend you on this.

Excellent perspective here... it is often all too easy to focus on the obnoxiously over-listened pop music; but at the same time, there is no denying that this technical age is at least allowing good artists to reach their audience, even if it is in smaller numbers. My particular taste in music is very niche, and would likely be impossible to fill without the freedom of information we have today!
