The Queen

The Queen

A Story by Grace Coggins

She may be your princess, but I am still the goddamn Queen.
You vie for her hand, but it is by mine that the world keeps turning. I am Helen of Troy, my beauty alone can launch a thousand ships. I am Elizabeth or Victoria, the longest reigning queen this world has ever seen. I am mighty and powerful. I am deadly and magnificent.
What is she compared to me? A delicate flower or a spring morning. Whereas I am a rose, all beauty with thorns. I am a clam winters morning, but cold if you stay too long.
You may love her, the little princess. But I? Elizabeth reigned without a king by her side, bringing England into the Golden Age. To her, you're a prince. To me, you are a subject. For it is common knowledge that a Queen without a King is historically better.
You told me once that I was your princess. I told you then I was a queen.
I am the queen.
Long may I reign.
