Light and Life (For OnTap #3)

A Poem by G. K. Bostic

I wonder as I gaze upon my life

How I could be so blessed and have such love.

The early years had many a painful night

But childhood pain has faded to the past.

The years of later life are much more kind

The days of darkness were replaced by light.

But now my days are running out of light

And soon I may be running out of life.

Please give me time so I can find a kind

Of legacy to leave to those I love.

So quickly gone my days of youth were past

With ignorance of quick approaching night.

As life is day, so death shall be the night

And death, the thief, shall take away my light.

I was beguiled by dancing days that past

Like sunshine and the dark side of my life,

But walking through the pain I learned to love.

Sweet Thanatos, oh won’t you be so kind

To grant my wish for now….Be thus a kind

Of hero to my heart I pray each night.

Allow me a reprieve to show my love

Allow me time to bask within the light

Of love I’ve found with angels in my life,

To make amends for lapses in my past.

The days of wasting time are long since past.

I choose to make amends and to be kind.

I shall not waste another day of life,

No wasted day nor single wasted night,

And morn shall find me thankful for the light

And one more day to share with those I love.

Each day I’m given I will fill with love

My future may be briefer than my past,

But now that I am closer to the light,

I’ve gained the wisdom of a heart that’s kind

And I can lay my head down every night

And know I’m making all I can of life.

So let me love and make up for the kind

Of careless past before the final night

Shall douse my light and terminate my life.

This is the first time I ever tried a Sestina and probably the most difficult form I've ever attempted. I hope you like the result.

The uncertainty of the future and the brevity of the past. The wonder of the sky and the qquestions it brings up. Amazing usage of clouds and space.
