How are you?

How are you?

A Poem by gabiaimee

Who do you think you are?
I guess a better question to ask
Would be
Who do you think I am?
How do you think I am?

This morning I ordered a
Latte and sat by myself at the
Large wooden table in the center of the
Room. It didn't feel as empty
As I thought it would.
I watched a young couple
Through the window
Tie up their golden retriever
Right outside the door.
(Even though this cafe is dog-friendly.)
It waited
Without crying or pulling on the
Lead that trapped it in stillness.

If I were that dog I would not
Wait so patiently
As I watched you savor each moment,
Not once glancing in my direction,
Pulling flake by flake off of
that damned butter croissant.

I'm the one that runs
And runs and runs
And runs and in the end
It doesn't even matter where I
Am or how I'm doing.
Have you ever thought about me?
Have you ever wondered just what
In the Holy Name I'm doing on
Facebook at four in the morning?
Have you ever asked yourself who's
Standing next to me in that picture
From the trip to the coast that
I took for my birthday?
Have you ever wondered if that could've been you?
