In LoveA Poem by gabiaimeeI have always been in love
When I six I thought I was in love
with a little stuffed spotted cow whom I named after a cartoon character. When the closet doors were left open at midnight she would guard me, sitting silent and still on my pillow while I cuddled with coloured blankets inches away. When I tucked her underneath a couch cushion to protect her from the neighbour's cat just like she sheltered me at night, I lied in bed crying, never sleeping, for three days. When I was ten I swore I was in love with the athlete who kept me watching the game. He was foreign and handsome and loved his children but I imagined he would have left his wife if he ever met me. When I was twelve I told my friends I was in love with the scrawny prepubescent boy who held my waist at the school dance. His clumsy feet crushed my toes at times but all is forgiven because he must've loved me and the way I mockingly smiled from his arms at the other girls who weren't dancing. Now at seventeen I believe I am really in love with the first boy to send me "The L Word" through his vocal cords, lips, and hands. In years I am sure I will reminisce and say that I did not know love at seventeen but love means different things to different people different ages different generations so I have always been in love.
