Dragonheart, PrologueA Chapter by Kaitieread and you'll find out!Sunlight feebly streaks through a small, slit-like crack in the roof of the ice cave, barely giving enough light out to see. The rays strike the ice coating the walls and floor and reflect back, like a mirror. Hanging from the roof are massive shards of ice reaching all the way down to the floor, glistening like freshly fallen snow.
In the farthest, darkest corner, sits a young girl no older than eight. A mop of tangled chestnut hair dangles from her head down to her toes, hanging limp like a dirty towel. Her skin is a pale white and her body skinny, starved of edible food. Her eyes, so bright green, are reduced to a dull, mucky color, devoid of any emotion.
She feels him before she hears him. His powerful presence will alert anyone near enough to him no matter how hard he tries not to. Fear enters the girl, but she keeps care in not letting it show.
Sister!
Keep calm, Sia, her sister said, you must never let your emotions go. He can't find out about your abilities.
Mina's voice in her head calmed the girl's rising fear. Mina is right. He can never find out. Her mother's last words rang in the girls head, No matter what happens, you must never tell anyone other than yourselves about you and your sister's gifts. I love you, sweetie.
Tears began welling up in Sia's eyes and she blinked hard to hide them. He was coming, and that meant no emotion.
A long, low howl echoed through the cave, chilling the girl to the bone. Thundering steps raced in her direction, making the floor rumble and the shards shake. Out of one tunnel, a large, black wolf burst out with three silver ones on it's tail. The girl froze and waited in dread as the darker wolf marched forward, it's hungry eyes fixed on her.
I am hungry . . . he growled, and you know what that means . . .
Sia miserably held out her wrist and, without a second though, the wolf dashed forward and tore open her wrist with his sharp canines. He greedily feed on the girl and the wolves behind him howled with anticipation for their turn.
The black wolf had done this many times before, so she knew what to expect. Though every time it still drained her. And every feeding, she lost more and more blood. And she was feed barely enough to keep her alive. She dreaded the day when she didn't have enough blood to sustain her and the wolves pack. Then she'd be of no use to him and she knew what happened to those unfortunate souls . . .
No, she and Mina would escape. One day, Sia and Yasmina Dragonheart will leave this cave once and for all. © 2013 Kaitie |
