Can You See Me?A Poem by Kirby Inc.You never know what you've lost until it is too lateCan you see me? I’m that guy who blends right in. No one ever noticed me No one ever praised me I’m happier this way I raise my hand occasionally in class But today the teacher does not see What’s wrong with everyone? Why are they so sad? Some of the girls break down in tears My teacher fights to hide her own What’s wrong? Why can’t you see me? The day ends; I head home Greet my parents when I get in But my greeting falls on deaf ears I find my mother in my room; her eyes red and tear-streaked What’s wrong, mom? Why are you crying? I’ll clean my room, I promise! Just please don’t cry! I found my father at the cemetery On his knees, praying, crying. Crying, “Lord, why did you take my son from me?” Hearing that I looked down at the tombstone at his feet And saw my name engraved there No, this can’t be right! I cried out to my dad. Please, dad, I’m right here! Please, dad, don’t be sad! © 2010 Kirby Inc.Author's Note
