What We Are

What We Are

A Poem by Friks

We are, what we are made of.
We are what our parents have been.
We are joint products of our ancestors,
Damned with their qualities, weaknesses, strengths, and impurities.
Just as they were, we are something of our own,
But not far enough removed from everything we have ever known.
We watch ourselves shape into beings, just as we watch others.
We are slow to realize what we are seeing until, well until we no longer bother.
Bother to ask, bother to care, bother to give a damn about whoever wasn't there...
There, where you felt the pain,
Where you broke into little pieces and had no choice but to pick them up again.
There, where you were alone, cold as stone,
No heartbeat, not even a thought of your own.
There, where life overwhelmed you and you felt as though you could no longer go on.
There, where you filled with joy, bubbled like a fountain,
Felt like you were on top of the world!
Felt like this was all you ever needed to know.

These things wash us about all the days of our life.
We might not see them, hear them, even feel them!
But they are there, right there within you.
Right here within me.
Everywhere in everything we do.
Wether it be a motion to step away from it,
Or a notion that there is no escape from it.
We are what we are.
And that is a matter to settle with your heart.

Take whatever you can find. Take it in your hands!
Bring it close to your heart,
And test it!
Try it!
Live it!
Take what you see to be good from this and make it your own.
Life is this place we are in,
You can't choose where you begin,
But you can choose where you will end.

We are what we are,
And if there is no glue that will mend,
No hand that will extend,
No cool to stop this fever,
No heart to say "come hither".
Then, you have done little to find true pleasure...

we should be mindful of our thoughts and actions every day of our lives. we should remember where we came from, but we don't need to identify ourselves with them. we must use our strength to face whatever life has thrown our way weather it be times of happiness or times of adversity. excellent poem.

Precisely! Thank you. :)
I loved this poem. Very well written and you expressed yourself clearly. The diction was wonderful as well. I also liked the emotion of the poem and also its kind of carpe diem attitude.
"Where you broke into little pieces and had no choice but to pick them up again."
I loved that line the most out of this poem.
