like  a sledgehammer you wore me down

    crazy glued my exhibited heart to you,  

the pieces were recognizably flawed

The thing that never ceases to impress me is how you can catch such fleeting emotion and put it into words. I just tried went: Go on and sad Rene what you thinking? sepulchral silence nothing . So when I try to imagine how you are able to trap impressions of painted emotions that on top they are imprinted with real life experiences, lessons learnt, I even felt the "on your way " "off you go" in this lines. I would have to read like ten book and go from two hundred lines to one fifty just to be able to explain what you just shared with me.

Not sure I should respond to this........But the sentiment is captured in 'Speaking to the Clouds' Which is not about you as you know. Struggling 'artists' do get frustrated with their creations and want to start the next bust and make it perfect. When we seek a safe place and it resists allowing us to land, we panic and look for somewhere else to flee. Nice analogy.

That's the problem with winning a woman's heart by using a sledgehammer.... you leave too many broken pieces and she becomes more broken than ALIVE!!! Whole and wanting to be in love is always better (in my opinion) than in pieces and "crazy glued" to someones heart.. even though at times it seems that love has signed it's name on every single sledgehammer there is. "KABONG"!!! Besides, how is it possible to love someone up close and personal like with no arms (as in Venus di Milo)???

I love this song by P.Gabriel cause the heart of it was "I shed my skin, this is the new stuff", it was the reinventing himself and his music, he was becoming more consciously aware of the world's suffering [especially in Aparthaid S. Africa] and transforming it into music.. and this sometimes takes a sledgehammer to do)

Anyway, It's true what Rene says below, you are able to take an art work and music and turn them into personal testimonials to not only your life, but to make new visions of art in words... very cool indeed!!

Sorry, I'm butting in, but you know I have to get my two cents in on any musical conversation ;) I think Gabriel was the first rock star to experiment with make-up and bizarre characters and costumes...he was doing it with Genesis before Bowie or Kiss came along...people think he was an odd guy in the 80s, he was downright creepy in the 70s haha And Curt's right, I think he was also the first guy to dabble in world beats and tribal sounds, and from there he started writing about S.Africa and Biko and so on...he's a genius, but he's one of those freaky geniuses ;)

Steve, I think Frieda is referring to you and Gabriel as being the geniuses and wearing make up and masks.... ;0)

Not sure I would see P Gabriel as weird or freaky. More trend setting and innovative. He definitely was one of the first big name music artists that brought African and World music to the U.S. This was in the early 80s. There were others before him, like Charlie Parker but due to mostly racism these voices and sounds were never really promoted

Gabriel and others began fusing world beats and rock and roll and this also happened in blues and jazz... I personally love this kind of melting and blending into a sound unique and inspiring...

And Frieda, I think you would look really good in one of those Central African witch doctor masks.. no one would ever use a sledgehammer on you again. You could keep your heart and then come to the sunshine state and give me a hug with your still attached arms... :-p xxoo

Yes, true music lovers do recognize him for his innovations and the ground he broke...but when you're around fifteen and you discover Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, the first thing that comes to mind is 'okay this singer is creepy' haha ;P I actually like Charlie Parker as well and have some of his stuff here, mostly old radio broadcasts and the like...

As always, you have managed to create a tone, move the reader and tell a story in such few words..
The first line is one that touched me more than anything... how true... most people never take the time and care to see "deep" enough... they just see what they want to see and make assumptions based on that.. how sad... but so common... "perceived as whole".. can relate to this...
then you use the power of a "sledgehammer".. I mean they meant business didn't they.. jeez... they do "crazy glue" us to them huh?... it feels as if you are a part of them and if ever taken apart will not be able to function again... those flawed pieces are more beautiful than most ma'am... let em move on.. didn't realize the priceless, rare masterpiece they had!!! good riddance!! another lovely write...

Been a big fan of his since my cousin turned me onto Genesis eons ago it seems now...when we first fall in love, we don't seem to see beyond that facade of passion's clutches, then we get smacked upside the head with reality...like a sledgehammer for sure! :) Thanks so much April, always appreciate your in-depth and insightful reviews.
