...because

...because

A Poem by Frieda P

...people ask me why I am so cynical,
why can't you take the chance and trust,
the answer is simply 'because of you'
reflective views flip my psyche into another dimension
you ask why, I keep my distance never to connect on a deeper level
I laugh and smile, I learned that from you, a keen cover to hide the truth
'because of you' my mind is twisted, my body  recoils
listless in the heavy load, a burden that was not my doing
so, when people ask 'why so wary', I say something flippant
to cover my painful angst laden reasons why, but we both know...
it's 'because of you'.....................

Umm...appears you struck a major cord with this one, as it hit me with a hard surface-only punch (edit...edit...edit...)...
but in my case, the "you" in because of you is one of two people that were supposed to raise and nurture.

Thanks for the share

Jazzed you enjoyed Annabelle Lee!
Very well put and without a trace of self pity. I like the way the poem builds to the final 'because of you', unequivocally reminding this person that no one else is responsible for the cynical attitude.

Thanks John, appreciate the visit and review.
I'm struck by the clarity of your verse. This was a very personal write and one of self-Revelation. You describe a situation, many of us have experienced. You leaving me wondering what comes next...

We'll keep each other posted.
Yes I was there one. She thought I was the reason for her being unhappy so she left only to return in a year and say she had made a mistake. Oops I had moved on. Only to again be in a place where I was the one who cared and she was only looking for a Daddy for the kids. She also ran around and stayed out late and wasn't home after a long day at work, till she too finally left. So yea the wounds are deep and the scars are wide but then there is that hope for love. Never ending hope for love.

Thanks for your thoughts here Tom, muchly appreciated.
When someone breaks us, truly breaks us it becomes hard to see past these walls that have been built up around us Our protection becomes sarcasm and quirky little laughs, though for the most part this defense is involuntary, it comes because survival steps in and adds just one more stone each time. We find ourselves saying "perhaps" from time to time because somewhere inside we want that to be the case. Perhaps it will sometime...perhaps it won't. Ripping at out hearts again Frieda, bringing those tears to our eyes, created by broken hearts and offered friendship of a truer nature.

"you ask why, I keep my distance never to connect on a deeper level" this line truly hits home. when the wound of the past is so deep, we could still feel the pain every time we see the scar.

Exactly gabrielle, thanks so much...
...because of you... -- for the seond time tonight I've been moved to tears by a write. I really felt this one in the heart. I can relate so deeply to this piece...the idea of being cynical, of putting on that "happy face", but always waiting for the other shoe to drop. Well done, my friend...well done!

Thank you Friday, sorry for the teardrops, but jazzed you felt this one!
Of course, this is a great song that goes perfectly with your poem. The poem has a wide range to it, could be parents, lover, friend, or sibling... I get it, understand it, and as usual you write with style, my friend.
