Heartwarming T.V.

Heartwarming T.V.

A Poem by Reclaimed
"

(formerly the freak show)

"

What's heartwarming?

A paraplegic mixed martial artist

Getting pummeled

Or the lady who got her face eaten off by a chimp

On Oprah

Let's listen to that 911 call... right in front of her

Everyone cry now

Her face is a hole

Everyone cheer now

Oprah dried a tear

They are so brave

So heartwarming.... exploitation

It draws the crowd

We used to have freak shows

Just as ugly now, if you can see

Through the heartwarming tv

With no face, the sans hand and foot warrior - we have the freaks

We have the shows, we have the means to rebroadcast....

To the broader audience

And that entertainment dollar?

Stretched over commercial breaks

A fortune is made

Still not for the freaks

They're just the 8 billion dollar industry fodder

The rebuilding is a sham

(sigh)

It's really not that heartwarming

Most of us really are that gulible though

And that's really f*****g heartbreaking

I've read this one a few times now and I like what I interpret its message to be.

I guess because (for me anyway...) it talks to our sick obsessions as a society with the whole reality TV and talk show thing that really exploits and sometimes glorifies tragedy, disease, crime etc etc and not so much for awareness and education of the public as for profit and to satisfy their viewer's grotesque urge and desire to see and gawk at things they will never understand and are completely desensitized to.

I get watching the news, it's good to know what's going on in the world but this write here reminds me more of the Hunger Games and the suffering of the districts and their tributes for the simple amusement and entertainment of the Capital. Anyhow, that's my two cents on this one.
