The War

The War

A Poem by FreezingIris

I am at war with my eyelids right now

They’re using all the force they can muster

To grow heavy and heavy and close

My brain is on their side, I may as well be counting sheep

For all the good it’s doing me

My hands, however, have a story to write

They will not stop moving, creating

My legs seem to be indifferent,

With the rest of my body

But my eyelids are unrelenting

Fingers, deftly, over the keys

Quietly, tapping " that was a much longer blink

Than I had expected to take

My eyelids are pulling in their last forces

My brain is telling me how tired I am

My knees start to ache " they’ve been recruited!

Fingers, still moving, even under my long blink

My head lolls to the side " will no one fight with me?

It seems even time is on their side " late at night

Or early in the morning.

My brain says the latter

My fingers say the former

Tired, sleepy, I’m going to succumb

My hands have written all they need

My eyelids will finally be at peace

Goodnight.
