The Battle

The Battle

A Poem by FreezingIris

You murderous, unsympathetic fiend!

How dare you come into the lives of the many!

What audacity to overtake a person’s being!

The surreptitious ways about you are horrendous

Your stealth, your wit, your cunning devices

They’re all but pawns in your game of death!

The way you lie dormant, that false sense of security

It’s deplorable, you’re immoral, and hated by all

The sound of your name will send minds reeling and hearts fluttering

You won’t even give a swift, clean ending

You stay, you torture, you break a person down

Until there’s nothing left but hopelessness and fear

Though there are those who fight, those who resist!

They combat your cruelty with a resounding cry

And some of them do triumph over you!

But we have come to realize that your fights will be nonstop

Never will you cease to bring pain and heartache

And our relentless tries against you will not end!

The human race will not be bested, not again!

One day, somehow, we will find our answer

And no more will anyone, fight the battle against cancer
