To Love This World

To Love This World

A Poem by Petal

I would love to someday dig my roots back into this Earth

For my wings to fly so high that the when I breathe in the clouds and stars get lost in my lungs

To fall in love with this world would be magnificent

However, for it to fall back in love with me would be even more inspiring

My soul yearns for the warmth of the sun on my back

The ocean’s tide to be as calm yet just as violently beautiful, like the first of a lover’s quarrel

I want to sink my teeth into the very ground that gives me life and taste the salt of the land

To be whisked away by strawberry breezes would be beautiful

However, I am stuck here on the ground

My wings clipped, no longer able to sore

Like a bird trapped in an open cage, forced to stare out into the ever welcoming world

These roots are rotten to the core, so much so that this trunk and its leaves have been poisoned

The riches soils that can only cure me are close enough for me to see but just far beyond my reach

To fall in love with this world would be the greatest thing, and I am love struck

But it is no longer in love with me

I no longer belong here to even bask in its beauty

This Earth will never love me again

Forever and ever
