I went for a walk today

Through the town of Tipton, Kansas

Past the library (only open on Thursday)

And fully functional phone booth.

Where they announce the aldermen's meeting

On a sandwich board set in the middle of Main Street

St. Boniface has a grotto

With the saint himself and

and the Virgin Mary

I stood there staring at the grotto

With the setting sun playing in the stones' shadows

When I heard her

"I am Supergirl!", she yelled.

As she sprinted down the sidewalk

Her pink backpack flapping like a cape.

She stopped when she got to

The corner where I stood watching her.

She looked me over and asked,

"What are you here for?"

      "Pheasant hunting and taking pictures"

"I am going to my babysitter's house"

"Well, you have a good time"

"You should look for cars when you cross the street",

She warned, I promised to watch out for cars

As Meredith flew on to save

Her next helpless citizen.

Supergirl will save the world. Sometimes her name is Anna. She can do the magic trick of entertaining an entire yard-full of guests and having each one leave thinking he or she is her very favorite. Yes, this is good.

"Her pink backpack flapping like a cape...." How can not help but smile? A great snapshot of small town life and I like the unusual choice of the imagery that you created. One thing about line three, I wonder if the word "in" is correct, I think that on would be better.

Thank You for the invite, a most enjoyable read!

P.S. I just showed this poem to my wife an she was visibly moved by it. A big smile, as she moved away from the computer screen, and a heartelt "that's nice." ("Nice" would be in italics if it was easier to do on this site.)

I've read this before, as you know, but the re-acquaintance with the work was equally welcomed.

It deserves a full reading at a winery in Montserrat, Missouri at a date soon to be determined.
