Idle Teens Denounce God

Idle teens lounge like lions basking in savannah sun

they cover surfaces, an infestation of apathy

discussing what is happening.

They just don't know,

And they'll pretend they know - make grand statements,

'We're the omniscient youth!,

The omnipotent youth!,

Transcendent youth!', 

A generation that replaced God; dismantled him

from the ivory skies;

Picked at the ill conceived constructions of power - 

Power is nothing when you're young and invincible.

There are no words to explain how true this is. I love the sense of contradiction at the end; you would think with power comes invincibility, but with a mindset like that, it can often come off as weakness. I think this idea that we are greater than God is infectious and it poisons many other age groups. However, I agree that it's worse with teens, as they believe they are wiser because they were born in a new age, a world they know nothing about. This also occurs in elderly people, as they believe they've experienced more, and thus can make perfect judgements on the state of being. I always say, "Men are wise when they stop thinking they are", which basically means one begins to grasp spiritual intellect when they stop thinking so high of themselves for once. This poem sincerely made my day. Great job!

Thank you! I'm actually still a teenager it's a self-reflective piece on myself and my peers so it's by no means supposed to be a slam poem about apathetic teenagers! I'm glad you think the contrast at the end balances this out a bit - I did wonder whether people would think I'm a gripey old man complaining about them youths
