Incoherent

Incoherent

A Poem by Kathryn Desautels

It seemed as if everything got lost in translation.
She heard that they were talking, but could not make sense of what they were explaining.
Nodding her head to answer, but having no real way of comprehending.
It was like a one-way radio filled with static and slight mumbling.
She was trying to answer, but the f*****g button was stuck.
There was an aftertaste in her mouth that would not disappear.
It was a shiny metallic thermometer that they had just used.
Cracks started forming in the corners of her lips.
She opened her mouth to ask for a glass of water but nothing came out.
There were doctors in long white lab coats surrounding her and a nurse holding her cold, shaky hand.
She was poked and swabbed until her face was pale as snow.
Through frosted glass, she could see the shadow of her mother pacing the hallway.
She tried to get up to console her parent, but doctors held the ashen carcass down with ease.
Off in the distance, she heard someone crying.
I felt a nurse wipe her eyes with a tissue.
