AbandonedA Story by fountain-pen3This is a story I entered for a 500 word story competition. It is about a young girl who goes through tough times in orphanages, different families, the lot!I remember the rain, the angry thunder, and the dancing flashes of lightning; The pure black night, scattered with rain and storms; the cries of an infant in a blanket, left helplessly in the bitter streets of Basingstoke. That infant was me, Matilda. I was left as a young child, in the harshness of the night. My Mother was poor 17 year old, scared and unable to look after me with no-one to support her. She had to leave me. I didn't know what to do. I was a small, defenseless infant who'd been left to fight the terrors of the night. There was no chance, no luck, no hope. But just as i sunk into a small, cold heap of despair, someone found me. Mike and Clare found me. They saw and took pity. They took me to their home and they nursed with me with such love and kindness, I can't describe to you. I thought I finally had the family I deserved, but I was wrong, for it had hardly been 8 years since they'd taken me in, when they too gave me up. It all happened very fast. They called me downstairs to talk and the seriousness of their faces I knew this wasn't good news. They told me straight that I wasn't legally their child, so I had to go to an orphanage. I sat there in silence, wondering what to do next. Clare ended the science; "Matilda? we are SO sorry, honest" She put her arm around me, but I shook it off. Then I ran upstairs to my room. Tears rolled down my cheeks as I angrily shoved thinks into my suitcase. I guess I knew this day, was coming. It had to. And here it was, looming down on me like a sky-scraper. I headed back downstairs in silence and we left the house. In the car no-one said anything as we drove through the gates of 'Miss Johnson's Home For Girls' . as I got out of the car, Clare and Mike tried to hug me, but I stepped away and walked briskly to the orphanage with my bags. And for a while, that's where I lived. I made a great friend, Leah, who's parents had died in a car crash. She had no other relatives, so she had to come here. We hung out together and had some great times. We played games and joked around. For that one, happy time of my life, I forgot about my harsh past. I learnt to just admit that this is where I belonged. People came and went, adopting/fostering other children. I never thought I'D get adopted! It all happened one day when 2 people came to adopt someone. I accidentally ran into them during a game of chase with Lisa. They didn't seem to care, and that afternoon, Miss Johnson called me and said the coup wanted to adopt me! So I stayed with them we started our whole new journey together... © 2014 fountain-pen3Author's Note
