The Toad Takes it All In

The Toad Takes it All In

A Poem by MARZ

Croaking whisper voice named

Britney -

takes in the photographs of her thighs

And makes her own photo album.

She says,

"This c**k ain't too

big.

This toad can take it all

in."

If you touch her, you'll get bumps and lumps

on your skin

called herpes.

So don't kiss the toad - just look.

Here's a reverse Frog Prince -

The beautiful turned sour,

and, if there's time left in the show,

maybe back to beautiful.

Scream to be left alone -

Grumble in a water-filled hole

Scream for that gorgeous body,

say,

"Maybe I always

sounded like a toad.

But I didn't always look like one."

Don't worry, though -

the toad

can take it all in.

This is a painful poem to read and so it's a way of identifying that both the author and the reader are alive. The toad in this poem, far from really wanting to be left alone, is screaming for attention and this is such a universal human behavior that I can't imagine anyone not identifying with it - even if it's the self that they used to be. A vivid and startling poem, Marz.
