Young/Suicidal Mother

Young/Suicidal Mother

A Poem by MARZ
"

wah wah

"

Oh, wah wah
you’re really stuck now
beaten into submission by a
belt and a baby
once you shoot that
watermelon out of your garden hose
wah wah,
really stuck now

Now you’re a whole new set of a sad case -
you can hear it now
“Well, why’d she have a kid with an
abusive father?”
“Well, why didn’t she run away for
the sake of the baby?”
“She shouldn’t have married him in the
first place.”
Maybe they believe you conceived
out of genuine love-making.

Wah wah,
you’re such a good
mom
old-fashioned like from
long ago and far away
the good old days -
before suffrage, before
your sex was burdened with the
right to vote and own property.
The good old days -
so you can suffer from a cabin-fever sickness
wah wah
wah wah
wah wah...

“How horrible - this crazy woman
killed her baby and herself.”

I love being on the inside looking out. This poem gave me just that. A perspective to keep wagging tongues at bay. Thank you for the reality.
