Monsters under your bed

Monsters under your bed

A Poem by ForgottenMelody
"

Just when you think you're safe

"

As a child you checked for monsters under your bed

In your closet

In the deepest shadows of your room

As a teenager you check for monsters on the streets

Down dark alleys

In the deepest corners of your mind

As an adult you don’t check for monsters

You think you are grown and monsters don’t exist

You feel safe that monsters can’t hurt you

Never do you think that you should check for monsters in your bed

Monsters lying beside you whispering “I love you”

Sneaking their way into every chamber of your heart.

When you discover that monster

That villain

That nightmare that extends beyond fear

That extends beyond the fog of slumber

You ask yourself…why did I ever stop looking for monsters under my bed?

We do tend to let our guard down as we progress through life - the feeling of self-security that builds as we thrive in the adult world can be a major weakness when we encounter the monsters we never knew existed.
Good metaphorical write FM.

Well I don't think that adults stop looking for monsters, I just think by the time we reach adulthood we are able to see them easily and even if their not scaly and clawed they're still out there. Finding out that you've been sleeping next to one is an interesting turn for this piece, as I"m sure it may indeed hit home with some but surely not all. Overall, I like the work of progressing from child to adult in awareness. Good stuff.

Thank you Frieda....it is unfortunate that this happens but it doesn't define us...it defines them ;.. read more
I think this is a very clever poem. I love the juxtaposition of a childhood monster vs. an adult monster. We ignore warning signs too wrapped up in an illusion of bliss. Nicely done.
