PearlsA Poem by ChantelWritten during sophomore year, a tough time for me.In her mind, she paints with blood And swallows pearls. In her mind, she screams, But aloud no one hears. In her mind she sees the person she wants to be, Someone they'll listen to-- Oh, anything for someone to listen. But every word has brought only disgust From herself and others.
She closes her eyes and it's midnight; She opens them to glaring light. "Oh, that I might sleep forever, Eternally lost in my dreams. Oh, that I might be the person I've always wanted to be."
A voice somewhere whispers, "Is it 'all about me?'"
She sits down in her chair And brings the glass of blood to her lips. The quiet murmuring of the people Gradually turns to chaos.
"Quiet!" she feels herself yell, But no one hears her. They never wanted to listen, either. The murmuring has turned to screaming. Everyone is in her face. "Listen to me! LISTEN TO ME!" The screaming voices rage, "You're not there for me! You're not enough! You'll never be enough!"
"I can't be enough," she says, and runs away.
In her mind she is a ghost, Important to no one. Has she found the truth? People only want her when they need someone to listen, But her words? Hers mean nothing. "Oh, the bullets I've tried to take for you..."
"You have to be enough," he whispers from far away. She starts to cry, but he can't see her. Hidden beneath her favorite blanket, Within a cold house, She closes her eyes and listens to the song meant to comfort her. She only cries more.
In her mind, she paints with blood And swallows pearls. No one can see this fantasy; No one would care if they could. There is no way to show them.
When she awakes, she sees blackness, And tastes tears. © 2014 ChantelReviews
