On The MoveA Poem by JessPartially inspired by the song "Get Out Of This Town" by Carrie UnderwoodBehind the wheel Of a hand-me-down silver car Nothing but a few suitcases Filled to the brim with Her most valuable possessions And some necessities With her as she drives Down the highway At three o'clock in the morning The road vacant Except for her fellow insomniacs Calmness and serenity filling her With every mile that passes Between her and the state border She passes over an hour ago.
Exact destination still unknown: She dreams of a sun So bright so you can't see anything clearly Radiating a heat so strong It clings to every inch of your body like second skin Of bright blue skies Occasionally interrupted by White clouds that look as delicate As the hair on a baby's head Of beautiful beaches With sand slightly darker than her skin Different hues and shapes of seashells and sea glass Scattered in every direction imaginable And ocean waves The shade of classic denim blue jeans After they've been in the wash a few times Glittering in the afternoon sun.
She dreams of California, Florida- Anywhere that isn't this town- Where she could lose herself In a crowd of people Yet still know her place Where there weren't any reminders Of every bad memory she possessed But where she'd be completely alone Without the presence or support Of those she holds closest to Where she couldn't identify A single face in the crowd. © 2011 Jess
