Together Again

Together Again

A Story by Blooming Flower

She was walking along the river, her hand absentmindedly fidgeting with the necklace hanging around her throat. She stopped to stare at the water, her eyes filling with tears. The person who gave her this necklace was long gone. Her best friend, possible love for life. The women quickly wiped the tears from her eyes, angry at the sudden emotion. Her best friend had given her this necklace. He gave her this necklace and then disappeared the next day, never to be heard from. After years of waiting she finally gave up and moved on. She moved to a new town and started over after graduating.
That didn't stop her from wondering if he was still out there. If he was married, if he had a good life. She would never know, only wonder. Maybe he wondered the same things about her. She could easily supply the answers. She was still here, she never dated, and her life was good. She had a good job and a nice home, lots of plants and one cat to keep her company. She went to her parents house every Saturday to talk about life and keep in touch. Sometimes they would prod her about looking for a husband but she ignored it.
It may be silly waiting for a person whom she hadn't seen for years but she couldn't bring herself to move on. He was her childhood sweet heart and for all she knew he could be a completely different person. He could be dead or long married. Well, not long married, he would be twenty-five. It meant that she still had time to find a husband.
Esmeray bumped into someone and heard something hit the ground. Whoever she ran into had caught her and was now helping her back to her feet. It was a guy, around her age, he had light brown hair and deep brown eyes; his face was covered in freckles. He looked embarrassed as he reached down and grabbed her bag. She couldn't stop the faint blush that bloomed in her face. She reached out and grabbed her bag from him. He looked ready to leave when something caught his eye. He was staring at her necklace, the one she had been fidgeting with moments before.
Esmeray was going to keep walking when the man reached under his shirt and pulled out a similar necklace. It was half a heart with a jagged edge where the other half was supposed to meet it. Esmeray instantly recognized it. It had the simple letter E on the front. Just like hers had the letter A on the front. Unless other grown men wore old necklaces around Esmerayy knew who this man was. He was her friend, the one person she longed to see for years now.
"Aither?" The man's eyes widened and he nodded. He reached out and gently took Esmeray's charm into his hand. He then took his and connected the two. The two people stood in shock as the stared at the connected charm between them. Esmeray couldn't wipe the smile off her face. She looked at Aither and saw tears swimming in his eyes. He quickly wiped them away and sniffed. Then he reached out and pulled her into a hug. Esmerayy quickly hugged him back, holding him tightly like he might disappear any moment. This was the happiest day of her life.

I liked the taste of memories in your words dear poet. You allowed the reader to feel the sadness of a goodbye and waiting. I liked the happy ending. Maybe? I liked the ideal of the necklace. I have wore a necklace for 35 years. The simple gifts. Our most valuable. Thank you for sharing the amazing story. You are a talented writer.
