A Poem by Floundering About

“I don’t know why they call it Whale Back Mountain.”
“Well, because it looks like the back of a whale.”
The shape multiplied out the window;
a dozen whales bred and breached in a sea of grass.
Trees harpooned them sometimes.
Power lines entangled them
beautifully.
The photo is only
a blur of conifers and black bowing wires.
A later photo shows the mountains clearly,
not whales’ backs at all, but sailors’ caps.

A tale of two opinions! I enjoyed the storytelling feel of this poem, it's almost as if you are listening in and taking notes on the conversation and then taking a note of the photograph itself. It's nice that you give us a little persona in the end line-not two whales at all but a couple of hats. It's as if you're telling us that when you look at things deeper, you see something different. I intentionally put layers in some of my works as you know. Maybe it's becaus I'm full of them myself ;)

Lovely work Ian. Thoroughly enjoyed reading and commenting.
