on dad's demise

on dad's demise

A Story by fleamailman

and how the dream had been so vivid then, with dad lying in his bed as he lowered the bedsheets to reveal a gaping infected mess where his guts should be, and then he pulling those sheets back up, yes so vivid was that dream in fact been that the goblin remembered that dream alone among many other dreams he has forgotten by now, until some months later, dad was indeed calling him over to arrange things for his demented wife due to the short time left to dad then, so perhaps then the goblin had somehow known deep down that something was amiss with dad, even if visually dad looked "right as rain" and "fit as a fiddle", mind you dad always did even in his advanced age, where more months have passed by now, and somehow there seems no time nor room left for sentimentality here, it just runs its course in the background while the goblin occasionally wonders if his next dream will likewise reveal his own thoughts to himself once more, didn't matter, neither of them were ever heart on sleeve types, nothing much to say really, just that as one gets older these things seem like ever nearer and ever more likely too, relating "...which when one thinks about it is utterly wrong of course, as it's ever that old line that goes no one has any more life than anyone else..."

Quite a sobering read for me goblin. I’d like to avoid thinking about it till I can. Maybe I’ll escape it? The concluding line is great. Everything evens out in the end, in the March towards the grave. Death is a great leveller.
