College is Killing Bohemia

College is Killing Bohemia

A Poem by Patrick L. Fannin
"

for m

"

She grew up, wanting to write for her audience
to bring consciousness to those few, if any
to touch one mind, would touch her soul
a girl with pure hopes and dreams

hopes and dreams to live in a studio apartment
to stress over this months rent, or next weeks $100 check
but also a dream to feel fulfilled with herself
to know she has found her place, to be centered

But, that dream was crushed early
when her parents couldn’t provide post-secondary education
she learned soon about student loans
and the toll they have on life

How could a writer pay back so much money
money that seems unjust for education
each year her tuition goes up
and the quality of schooling goes down?

She reluctantly chose to be a doctor, pre-med for her
the course load is information
a repetitive process of memorization
lost free time and a lost free spirit

Only if her hopes would have been realized
if her spirit would have flourished, and not destroyed
the creativity and expression that were un-met
could be just as important as an extra M.D.
