Best years of you life

Best years of you life

A Poem by Patrick L. Fannin

I burned myself today, at work serving a man his coffee.

I made the coffee special for him, exactly as he takes it

He doesnt care, thats not a gift but a duty to him

Im supposed to be his servant, the one to fetch his food.

The burn is bubbling and blistering

The pain is cold and dull but ever bump is sharp and hot

But I have to ignore it for the rest of my shift

Im paid 5.15 to ignore the pain and serve old crotchety men

I go home to do homework,

Im awake all night, trying to ignore my work-related injury

I am doing the homework I was assign Friday for Monday

Not out of procrastination but out of 8 hour days all weekend

I finish my work just in time for 4 hours of sleep

When I awake I get dressed and head out the door

I drop off my younger sibling, my prize for passing the drivers test

Then its to school where I strive to get a B so I dont work for 5.15 forever

Its all worth it; I am going to be better for it.

One day I will be the teacher who gives the homework

I will be the senior citizen ordering a coffee with 2 creams and a sugar

But I will be there for the next generation, to treat there burns
